Extreme Prematurity Assessments

Children & young people born pre-term are at increased risk of developing problems including:

  • Motor functioning issues and learning difficulties or challenges around educational attainment

  • Issues with communication & language

  • Executive functioning issues

  • Traits associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Due to the increased risk of developmental delay, which could have an impact on health & wellbeing, if a child is born at 28 weeks or earlier the current NICE guidelines recommend increased monitoring and support.  This SHOULD include a face to face cognitive assessment at 4 years of age to enable teams to identify any potential issues and enable support packages to be put into place, particularly in an education setting.

The assessment is a comprehensive process that includes two key components:

  • Cognitive Assessment

    • This is usually completed using standardised tests designed to look at how an individual processes and applies information.  The standardised nature of the tests mean that an individuals outcomes can be compared with an average for age expected outcomes and this is particularly important in identifying any delays in cognitive development which may be associated with prematurity.

  • Adaptive Behaviour Assessment

    • This evaluates social, practical and conceptual skills for daily living such as communication, self-care or problem solving.  It is often completed through structured interviews and questionnaires completed by parents, caregivers and / or teachers.

Together, these provide a full picture of an individuals intellectual functioning and their ability to manage everyday life.

Intellectual Disability Assessments

An intellectual disability (ID) assessment offers benefits for individuals, families and educational services by providing a clear understanding of a young person's cognitive abilities and needs, identifying strengths and areas of particular difficulty.  It can help give an understanding of:

  • The assessment can confirm if an intellectual disability is present and distinguishes it from other developmental or learning conditions.  This is essential for accessing appropriate services.

  • Results can guide the development of a tailored individual plan to help with specific areas of challenge, such as communication, planning or memory.

  • The assessment can highlight strengths which can be built upon and maximised to help with self confidence and independence skills.

  • Understanding the level of intellectual functioning can support planning for transitions into adulthood, including vocational training, independent living and community participation.

Education Health & Care Plan Assessments

A neuropsychology assessment can be helpful in supporting a school's application for an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP).  This is a document in the UK that outlines a child's or young persons special educational needs (SEN) and the support they require.

A neuropsychological assessment and report can be very helpful in understanding a child or young persons strengths and challenges, especially when applying for or reviewing an EHCP.  It can:

  • Identify specific learning needs as it can provide a detailed picture of cognitive development in specific areas such as language, memory, attention or problem solving

  • It can help pinpoint specific areas of difficulty that may not be obvious through standard school assessments

  • It can clarify emotional and behavioural challenges, such as difficulty with emotional regulation due to neurodevelopmental differences.

  • It can help with long term planning, especially as EHCPs are designed to support young people up to 25 years into their adult transition.

Neurodevelopmental Assessments

A neurodevelopmental assessment is a structured, multi-step process that looks at a child's development across several domains to build a clear picture of their strengths, needs and everyday functioning.

It typically begins with screening, using tools such as questionnaires and teacher / parent checklists to identify early signs that may warrant a fuller assessment.  This process determines if it will be right to go forward to have a formal comprehensive assessment around conditions such as neurodiversity including Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Sensory processing disorders for example.

As a sole clinician I can provide the initial neurodevelopmental assessment and I have close links with specialist multidisciplinary services who provide a full comprehensive assessment process.  If you are interested in checking out the service I am linked with then please visit www.child-neuropsychology.co.uk for more details.

A full assessment should be completed by a multidisciplinary team in line with best practice clinical guidelines
